‘CubJam’, the biggest Cub Scout camp event in 10 years, took place in the first week of June at Gilwell Park Activity Centre, one of many events in 2016 that is celebrating 100 years of Cub Scouting.
To mark the occasion, The Lego Group sent the UK’s only Lego Certified Professional builder, Duncan Titmarsh, along to construct a celebration cake, made out of 22,000 Lego bricks.
Duncan enlisted the help of Cub Scouts to take part in building the top of the cake, complete with 100 Lego candles. Cubs 100 Ambassador, dropped in for a slice of the action, and helped to ‘cut’ the finished cake with a group of Cub Scouts.
Attended by 1200 young Cub Scouts from across England and Wales, CubJam has been organised by a host of adult volunteers from across the UK. Rachel Jardine aged 10, Cub Scout from Fenstanton, said:CubJam is brilliant. I have made friends with other Cubs from all of the place. I have done so many activities and had I loved taking part in all the camping activities.
Louise Clover, an adult who has helped to organise the event, said:“It’s been a real challenge organising this event. I use lots of my business-based skills to lead, motivate and encourage a team of fantastic adults to make this camp really special for the young people who attend.
“Most people don’t realise how much fun it is being a volunteer with Scouting. It’s great to put my spare time into something that makes such a difference to so many boys and girls. It helps them to believe they can do anything. I love being part of a team with a like-minded bunch of people running events like this. You can’t beat the feeling when you see the young people having so much fun.”
