Creative design showcased in pop-up Ciao Chow experiment

Design duo Piper Skillman and Mark Watty will premiere their new 360 design brand Ciao Chow with the launch of a pop up residency, Ciao Chow Pop Up Bakery, from Wednesday 11th to Friday 20th September 2013, at 23 Frith Street in London’s Soho.

The project is a fledgeling one that recently failed to raise more than 24% of a Kickstarter Internet fundraising campaign that hoped to raise  a target of £15,000.

Ciao Chow was created as a design led concept for canines with attitude. ‘In response to years of Frappucino envy London dogs have been campaigning for café of their own’ says Mark Watty, who developed the concept with Piper Skillman. As interior and product designers the team set out to create a brand ID, retail template and retail product from scratch.

Ciao Chow draws ‘tongue in chic’ inspiration from yesteryear’s patisserie cafes, with an interior reminiscent of a vintage Italian bakery somewhere between Palermo and NYC’s Little Italy with a dash of ‘The Godfather’ and a good helping of ‘Roman Holiday’. The unifying design theme is a monochromatic graphic which was developed through research into 1950s and 1960s pastry packaging. Bold black and white diagonal lines and a David Hick’s style geometric interpretation of a dog bone feature strongly in the retail fit out and product range.

Planned features for the store include:

· Canine ocular vision 180 degree patisserie counter

· ‘Calming’ scented product wall

· Sniff menu for patisseries

· Bespoke dining furniture – geared towards canine/human interaction

Artisanal treats that are planned will be ‘geared towards a dog’s taste preferences, informed by nutritional benefits and common allergies.’
