To celebrate the launch of the Bohemian Rhapsody film, Youtube, in partnership with Mercury Phoenix Trust, fighting AIDS worldwide, and Transport for London took over 33 locations on the London Underground to bring artists, tribute bands and musicians performing Queen hits to life.
The total of all on-the-day monetary contributions will be matched by YouTube Music and donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust- founded by Brian May, Roger Taylor and their manager Jim Beach in memory of rock band Queen’s iconic lead singer Freddie Mercury who died in 1991 from AIDS.
YouTube Music app listeners can see a Queen ‘shelf’ with access to the film’s soundtrack and the back catalogue of the band.
Jim Beach, trustee of the Mercury Phoenix Trust commented:“Thank you YouTube Music for joining with us in celebrating the launch of the movie Bohemian Rhapsody by setting up this unique busking takeover of the London Underground and enabling us to raise money in Freddie’s memory for the Mercury Phoenix Trust – Fighting AIDS Worldwide.”
Vernon Everitt, Managing Director of Customers, Communication and Technology at TfL said:“London is a fantastically vibrant city and musicians in our Tube stations regularly bring their own kind of magic to our customers. This takeover with Queen and YouTube Music is a great collaboration for us, which is also helping to raise money for a thoroughly worthy cause.”
