Crowdfunder (UK) has achieved the official Guinness World Records™ (GWR) title for the Most users to visit a virtual pub. The charity initiative, which took place on 1st May, raised a total of £32,000 to support the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal, whilst supporting local pubs who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Members of the public were invited to be part of a comedy filled quiz night which was hosted by ‘landlady’ and double Chortle winner, Kiri Pritchard-Mclean. Kiri was joined by some of the biggest names in UK comedy including Russell Howard, Rachel Parris, Jason Manford, Suzi Ruffell, Joel Dommett, Lucy Beaumont, Marcus Brigstocke, Jenny Ryan, Nish Kumar, Stephen Bailey, Rachel Fairburn, Mark Watson, Joe Wilkinson and London Hughes to provide entertainment for the evening.
6,321 people joined the event online to smash the Guinness World Records title of Most users to visit a virtual pub. As part of the event, the excited audience were treated to a live adjudication and certificate presentation by Guinness World Records’ Director of Records, Adam Brown.
Proceeds from entry tickets and virtual pints purchased at the event were donated to the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal, which supports key workers who risk their lives on the front line. Funds raised will also go to support local public houses who have been forced to close during the lockdown period.
Crowdfunder (UK) and GWR worked in collaboration with the Covid Arms to create the event – upscaling its existing virtual comedy nights, which have seen great success since lockdown began. Crowdfunder also developed a bespoke platform to host the event, which facilitated the Guinness World Records adjudication process, whilst allowing for users to make donations and interact virtually.
Simon Deverell, Founder and Director of Crowdfunder UK said:
‘We set up the event to celebrate the incredible community spirit and humour which sits at the heart of the British public. By bringing back the great British tradition of sharing a pint, we were able to show our support and solidarity, not only for local businesses but for the emergency services who are working so hard to keep us all safe. We’re delighted to have raised so much money through this initiative and securing a Guinness World Records title in the process certainly added some extra excitement on the night’.
Adam Brown, Director of Records at GWR comments:
‘It was an absolute honour to present Crowdfunder (UK) with a Guinness World Records title and to be part of a fundraising initiative which has raised so much money for valuable causes. In these unprecedented times, any initiative that keeps people indoors whilst allowing them to have fun and raise money is definitely worth celebrating’.
Innovative, experiential brewery, Beavertown were also onboard to support everyone involved with the campaign. Helping pubs to get their regulars involved, raising funds for landlords and ladies as well as connecting communities across the UK. Beavertown also provided cases of their customers’ favourite beer Neck Oil and limited edition prints as rewards for those involved.
The Covid Arms initiative was supported by Guinness World Records’ Consultancy business, which works with brands, businesses and agencies to coordinate record attempts as part of their marketing campaigns. The Consultancy has recently launched a suite of new digital record formats which enable brands to digitally connect with their audiences and employees. A number of exciting online Guinness World Records attempts are set to take place in the coming weeks which will raise money for charity.
