Projection Artworks and BA map out London to Singapore.

Projection Artworks has undertaken an ambitious multi-media mapping project to celebrate British Airways’ inaugural A380 flight from London to Singapore.

The projection specialists have produced a 4D projection for British Airways’ A380 launch to Singapore. The 1-minute film demonstrated an intricate mapping and choreograph process that brought together a number of elements, including dry ice and a 1:20 scale model of the plane.

Tom Burch, from Projection Artworks, said: “Video-mapping uses bespoke animation to manipulate the look of a real-world object. Usually content is created from a specific viewing angle – where the audience or camera is standing – but to map the plane model we needed to produce animations to work from five different camera angles.

“In order to push the boundaries of video-mapping as a medium, we really forced the perspective in this piece, inspired by ‘3D’ street artists like Edgar Mueller and Kurt Wenner. These techniques are what create the amazing optical illusions you see in the video.”

Seven HD projectors were used to cover the background walls, floor and all sides of the aircraft, with a D3 media server enabling the creative team to play with perspective and perceived depth. Dry ice was deployed to create a visually stunning ‘canvas above the clouds’ effect.

Adam Chaudhri, British Airways creative PR manager, Europe, Africa, Asia-Pac & Middle East, said: “We wanted to create an epic spectacle that reflected the milestone of our latest A380 route launch. We were very keen to maximize the dynamic that projection brings to the visual picture, and I’m pleased to say Projection Artworks wholeheartedly embraced the challenge.”
